This three-part video series takes you through the measurement of the unloaded quality factor Q of a microwave resonator using a vector network analyzer.
Part 1 this part explains the working equations.
Part 2 demonstrates the measurement using a 4.9 GHz rectangular cavity resonator and a vector network analyzer.
The bonus Part 3 goes through how you can do this when there is only one port in the resonator.
Two techniques are described and compared.
The full two-port method relies on coupling measurements and the loaded Q to find the unloaded Q.
The insertion loss method relies on the unloaded Q and a calibrated measurement of insertion loss on resonance.
Both methods are found to field the same unloaded Q.
