Review TYT MD-UV390 GPS

Review TYT MD-UV390 Dual Band D.M.R.
with GPS radio. Hand held Digital Mobile Radio Cost was 119.99 new IP 67 rated which means it is resistant to dust and up to 30 minutes submerged in a meter of water. Living in Oregon a land of rain and more rain.
This was a major selling point for me. Build quality seems sturdy.
I would say slightly better than my DM1701.
The battery click-lock mechanism could be a little sturdier but is adequate and seems water tight. As with most radios these days I ignored the manual that came with.
It was outdated the second I updated the FW. Easy to setup I used EditCP running under Linux. The source code for editcp can be found at EditCp conveintly works for all three of my Digital mobile Radios the MD 380 Uhf DM1701 dual band and now the UV390. The MD UV390 can be setup from the keypad with some practice.
Making it a better field radio than my DM1701 or the 380 Before installing Toolz on the 380 that is. The 390 can also have more than one ID set. Form factor is very much like the 380 screen in the middle speaker on top keypad on the bottom.
A slight bit bigger but not by much.
Than again it is slightly smaller than the 1701. Battery charger uses a 12.5 Volt adapter and slightly different base than my MD 380.
Stock battery has not let me down.
Even on 2 day long adventures. I do wish the battery charged faster it definitely comes with a trickle charger. Internal speaker sound quality is decent to my old ears.
The volume works as expected. Transmitted audio quality has been reported as good in both analog and DMR modes.
I have listened to myself and it sounds like me. Wattage showed 4.5 on UHF and 4.7 on VHF.
Well within advertised numbers. Tested with my Micronta power meter. Keep in mind my old meter is not calibrated and is just good for ballpark numbers. Tested the distance I could send and receive text messages and digital voice it was near identical to the 1701 and 380. Scan speed seems adequate I could not tell a speed difference between it the MD380 and DM1701. I tried finding out what processor chip etc are used and could not find the data online.
I would not be terribly surprised if all three of my DMRs used the same cpu. Frankly right now the GPS is not that useful.
It does work but I wish it had analog A.P.R.S.
Auto Position reporting system.
The repeaters in the Salem area do not support digital APRS.
There is no easy way to text the GPS data to other radios either. Radio has two official firmware types.
One that does audio recording to memory the other provides 100000 or so contacts for use with the DMR database and showing call sign information. When updating and or changing the Firm Ware make sure to follow the instructions to a T.
A goofed FW can mean a destroyed radio.
Use at your own risk. I found the fw at I loaded the extended contact database FW.
Which allows me to use Editcp to load the contact database. Over all I like this radio it has the main features I need water proof dual band and DMR.
Fairly easy to setup.
I do not regret my purchase.
