Presto 25:12 Performed live at the Grand View College Center Iowa February 15 1987 Beethoven labeled this virtuoso sonata: written in a highly concertante style almost in the manner of a concerto.
It is essentially a concerto for both instruments however -- making it unique among the violinpiano sonatas. Leopold LaFosse 1928-2003 was a longtime professor of violin and I a doctoral student at the University of Iowa at the time of this concert.
It was an honor to perform with a person of his stature and experience.
He had played the work many times I however had two weeks to frantically learn and rehearse the piece while also preparing for three doctoral recitals presented shortly after this performance.
The piano had a very sluggish action making the repeated notes in the last movement quite challenging.
I think it was sheer force of will - and lots of coffee - that made the notes speak despite the breakneck tempo. My apologies for the so-so sound quality it was recorded on a small audiocassette recorder.
I hope however that the passion and drama come through nonetheless.
