You need filters for maker projects much more often than you think.

With microprocessor projects one always has the problem that the processor clocks interfere with analog inputs.
With the Arduino or similar micro-processor boards we have the problem that without low-pass filtering it is practically impossible to get a stable measured value from the analog inputs.
