The Serena Williams Project Isaiah Williams

Background: On September 8 2018 Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka played in the U.S.
Open Womens Tennis Final.
The match was marked by controversy when chair umpire Carlos Ramos awarded code violations to Williams for coaching racket abuse and verbal abuse.
While arguing with Ramos and other officials Williams stated that she was being treated differently because shes a woman.
After Williams received a point penalty and a game penalty Osaka went on to win the match 6-2 6-4.
Williams was subsequently fined 4000 for receiving coaching 3000 for racket abuse and 10000 for verbal abuse.
Following the match media coverage raised many questions.
Was Williams treated differently because shes a woman? Was she treated differently because of her gender and her race? The Experiment: The Serena Williams Project examines two moments from the match when Williams interacted first with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos and then with two other officials for the match Brian Earley and Donna Kelso.
In the first interaction Williams contests the point penalty a result of the coaching violation and racket abuse and in the second interaction she contests the game penalty for verbal abuse.
Actors have studied the speech and gestural patterns of Serena Williams Ramos Early Kelso and the commentators and they then work to perform those patterns verbatim.
New names have been assigned for each individual in the interactions but they preserve the cadence of the original speech patterns.
When necessary pronouns and other words have been changed to accommodate the changed gender andor race of the actor portraying Williams.
This is not a satire or a comic sketch.
It is an experiment using verbatim performance as an investigative tool to consider the following: What happens to your perception of the interactions between Williams the chair umpire and the officials when Williams gender is changed?
